World’s Best Airline Creates World Class Corporate Intranet
Qatar Airways is one of the youngest global airlines to serve all six continents, and the world’s fastest-growing airline connecting more than 160 destinations on the map every day. With the rapid growth of the company came the need for a new and improved internal communication hub for the over 40,000 employees worldwide to use to access information vital to their job. Qatar Airways also has the honour of being considered the top ranked airline in the world by several sources including Skytrax.
Intranet Objectives
After a rigorous international procurement process, Inorbital was awarded the project and undertook the rebuild of the fastest growing airlines intranet. Qatar Airway’s objectives were clear. The new intranet system needed to:
- Be completely mobile to ensure optimal accessibility
- Encourage staff and users to select and pin content/topics they follow to their favourites profile - an important feature identified by employees
- Ensure even the newest employee can quickly learn and navigate the corporate intranet.
- Create a community that keeps employees engaged and informed.
Airline Challenges
Simply stated, the four main challenges the new airline intranet needed to address and improve were communication, collaboration, information and business processes.
The intranet needed to serve as a corporate communication channel and an effective information and file sharing channel to improve collaboration from top down. The system needed to be highly configurable to meet the future needs and growth of the company and the unique functional requirements of each departments.
Intranet Scope of Work
Our Approach
Our Intranet design approach to this project required us to take an outdated and fragmented corporate intranet and create a powerful new intranet that would be scalable to support Qatar Airways rapid growth.
After an on-site strategy session in Doha, Qatar, the design team summarized all the information collected through user personas and stakeholder interviews to craft a creative brief used to inform the UX and UI designs. By creating a strong brief, the entire team had a firm grasp of the creative direction. The brief was approved by the Qatar Airways team, ensuring everyone was aligned on the strategic and creative direction moving forward.
Once the brief was approved, the design team moved forward with 20 high-fidelity wireframes as the base before starting the design process. These prototypes allowed us to identify and solve for potential usability issues before entering the design phase.
The concept designs brought the airline intranet to life visually, using colours, icons and images to create a fresh design that was distinct from the corporate brand. The visual style supported our focus on the clear presentation of information and efficient findability.

The intranet design success was a result of the iterative process. We tested and adjusted design based on stakeholder feedback, making it a truly agile and effective process.
To ensure scalability required to support Qatar Airway’s explosive growth, the intranet is built on the powerful Kentico platform.
